Triple Oak Power is hiring a Development Engineering Senior Director to deliver on the technical implementation of a robust pipeline of renewable energy projects with a focus on onshore wind. The Development Engineering Senior Director supervises the engineering and technical aspects of projects throughout the entire project development process. The Development Engineering Senior Director works as an integral member of the project development team on siting, permitting, transmission interconnect, marketing, finance, and public/government relations. Responsible for managing the engineering/technical input to the project development process including project descriptions and technical data for permit applications, coordinating site surveys, geotechnical, and hydrology investigations and reports, preparing and reviewing conceptual site layouts of proposed project facilities including electrical switchyards, transmission lines, substations, collection systems, and O&M buildings, preliminary landowner maps, wind turbine delivery flow maps, road use agreement exhibits, and conceptual grading & drainage designs as necessary.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serves as key electrical expert to scope projects and manage electrical engineering studies for primarily wind projects, with the opportunity for multiple technology projects incorporating solar, and energy storage
- Provides internal guidelines for effectively scoping projects in the development stage that ultimately will meet power and energy requirements, including assessing electrical losses, power factor, degradation, and efficiency expectations.
- Works with all wind turbine OEMs, solar module, battery, inverter, and transformer manufacturers with external electrical consultants to model the electrical characteristics of projects and manage the long lead equipment procurement of key electrical equipment
- Provides oversight and training to other development engineers on electrical design, construction, and operational matters
- Provides engineering/technical input to site evaluation and characterization, permitting, power purchase agreements, interconnect agreements, financial modeling, and other project development aspects
- Represents TOP in development, permitting and marketing meetings on engineering and technical issues, including meetings with the public and regulatory authorities
- Acts as liaison with development on matters relating to the engineering progress, quality, scope, and schedule
- Leads multiple projects simultaneously; manages competing priorities and overcomes obstacles to successfully meet submittal dates
- Creates Scopes of Work for engineering consultants and modifies and updates the boilerplate scopes as needed; checks the designs and calculations submitted by consultants for quality control and opportunities for cost reduction
- Meets with external customers to discuss design options, address concerns, and support contract negotiations
- Uses understanding of construction logistics, product, site, material, and labor costs to ensure that NPV and LCOE-optimized projects are developed
- Work with team members, third party consultants and various other stakeholders to optimize and drive projects forward and perform engineering analyses to support development and financing decisions
Qualifications:
- Excellent knowledge of electrical engineering design with electrical construction experience
- Demonstrated experience of bringing utility scale projects from development stage, through design, construction, and operations
- Strong knowledge and daily application of AutoCAD, GIS, and Google Earth
- Strong knowledge and weekly application of ETAP or equivalent electrical modeling software and/or review of consultant reports
- Strong knowledge of SCADA, relaying, and operational control systems
- Strong knowledge of interconnection requirements in WECC, ERCOT, MISO, and SPP
- Excellent knowledge of power project engineering, procurement, and construction processes and procedures
- Excellent knowledge of project commercial issues and project financial analysis
- Proficient knowledge of engineering economics and optimization process
- Well-developed and professional interpersonal skills; ability to interact effectively with people at all levels of the organization, as well as outside customers and vendors
- Organized with the ability to simultaneously contribute to multiple development projects
- Prior experience in the renewable energy industry. Desirable project experience to include project development and permitting, conceptual and detailed design, project engineering management, scope preparation, scheduling, cost estimating, procurement, and contracts
- Ability to read and interpret technical documentation and drawings and other common specifications
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering or related engineering field
- Professional Engineering registration preferred
- 12+ years of relevant technical experience; renewable power generation preferred
